How Do Hormones Work & What Do They Control?

Hormones, produced by glands like the thyroid, adrenal glands, pancreas, and reproductive organs, serve as vital chemical messengers in the body. They regulate crucial functions such as metabolism, growth, mood, and reproductive health. These messengers travel through the bloodstream, binding to specific receptors on target cells to initiate or inhibit various physiological processes. This complex signaling mechanism ensures our bodies maintain equilibrium and respond effectively to environmental changes, stress, and internal conditions.

Metabolism: Hormones like insulin, thyroid hormones, and cortisol regulate metabolism, influencing how our bodies use energy from food.

Reproductive Health: Sex hormones such as estrogen, progesterone, and testosterone control reproductive functions, influencing fertility, menstrual cycles, and secondary sexual characteristics.

Mood and Stress: Hormones like serotonin, dopamine, and cortisol affect mood, emotions, and responses to stress.

Growth and Development: Growth hormone, insulin-like growth factor, and thyroid hormones play critical roles in growth, development, and tissue repair.

Understanding Hormones and How HRT Can Help

Hormone Replacement Therapy effectively addresses a variety of hormone imbalances that can affect your health and well-being. Each hormone plays a crucial role in our bodily functions. Our personalized treatment plans aim to alleviate symptoms and improve your over all quality of life. Here are some of our common hormone that we see treated.

Testosterone:

Function: Testosterone is primarily known as the male sex hormone, but it is also present in smaller amounts in women. It plays a key role in muscle mass and strength, bone density, sperm production, and libido.

Hormone Therapy: Testosterone replacement therapy (TRT) is used to treat low testosterone levels (hypogonadism) in men and occasionally in women. It can alleviate symptoms such as fatigue, low libido, erectile dysfunction, and mood changes.

Estrogen:

Function: Estrogen is a group of hormones that are primarily responsible for the development and regulation of the female reproductive system. It also plays a role in bone health and cardiovascular function.

Hormone Therapy: Estrogen replacement therapy (ERT) or hormone replacement therapy (HRT) can be used to alleviate symptoms of menopause in women, such as hot flashes, vaginal dryness, and mood swings. ERT/HRT may involve estrogen alone or in combination with progesterone (for women with intact uteri).

Progesterone:

Function: Progesterone is essential for preparing the uterus for pregnancy and maintaining pregnancy. It also helps regulate the menstrual cycle and supports overall reproductive health.

Hormone Therapy: Progesterone is often included in HRT to balance estrogen levels and protect the uterine lining. It can help alleviate symptoms such as irregular periods, mood changes, and sleep disturbances.
